RBS Curriculum and Areas of Study

The requirements for Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–New Brunswick programs of study can be divided into three parts.

• Pre-business (Major Eligibility) Course Requirements
• RBS Core Course Requirements, and
• RBS Major Required and Elective Courses

Students must complete the requirements of their chosen major that are in effect at the time of their admission into Rutgers Business School.

In addition to the RBS curriculum students are required to complete the general education requirements of the SAS Core Curriculum.

To receive a degree from the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-New Brunswick, students must take at least 45 business credits at the Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate–New Brunswick.

Please Note: There are 4 courses from the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences (SEBS) that resemble Rutgers Business School course titles. If you take these courses or have taken these course after Fall 2011 you will NOT receive credit for these courses, and they will NOT count towards completion of your RBS degree. The courses are:

• Intro. to Marketing (11:373:231)
• Intro. to Management (11:373:241)
• Business Finance I (11:373:351)
• Business Finance II (11:373:451)

Due to the fact that RBS students cannot be enrolled in RBS and take these SEBS courses for credit, RBS students are not permitted to declare a second major or a minor in the Environmental Business and Economics program at SEBS.

Pre-Business (Major Eligibility) Courses

Students must complete the six pre-business eligibility courses to declare their major and take additional courses within the Business School. Students directly admitted to RBS must complete the pre-business courses by the end of the spring semester of their sophomore year. Students admitted as School to School and external transfers must complete the pre business courses by the end of the spring semester after they are admitted. All pre-business eligibility courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

RBS Core Courses

All RBS students must complete regardless of their choice of major program. All RBS core courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.

• 33:390:310 Intro to Financial Management for Finance Majors or Finance Concentrations (3) OR
  • 33:390:300 Intro to Financial Management for NON-Finance Majors and NON-Finance Concentrations (3) **
  • Starting in Summer 2024, 33:390:310 Financial Management for Finance majors will not be offered. All RBS students will take 33:390:300 Financial Management regardless of major. A grade of B or higher will be required in 33:390:300 to declare the finance major or finance concentration and to take any additional courses in the finance department.

  * Accounting majors must take Business Law I as their required course. All other business majors may choose either Business Law I or Business Ethics.

  **There are two choices of introductory Finance courses, for the Business Core. If you are declaring Finance as your primary major, OR there is any chance that down the road you might add a second major in Finance or a Finance concentration, then YOU MUST TAKE INTRO TO FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT FOR FINANCE MAJORS, COURSE 33:390:310. Intro to Financial Management 300 (33:390:300) is for non-Finance majors, and is ONLY acceptable if Finance will never be one of your Business School majors or concentrations.

  If you erroneously take Intro to Financial Management 300 (33:390:300), then in order to be eligible to declare anything Finance (major or concentration) you will be required to pass a proficiency exam to demonstrate that you have the proficiency of the introductory course that is intended for Finance majors, 33:390:310.

  *** Management Information Systems is required for all majors except accounting. Accounting majors must take Accounting Information Systems (33:010:458).

  **** Beginning in the Fall 2023 semester, there will be an update to the Business Forum (33:011:300) course requirement. If you have already taken Business Forum (33:011:300), and passed the course with a C or better, you will not need to complete, 33:011:301, 302, and 303. If you anticipate to graduate in January 2024, May 2024, or August 2024, you should plan to take the current one-semester, 2-credit version of Business Forum in either Fall 2023 or Spring 2024. If you enter RBS in the fall 2023 semester you will need to take the new three course sequence (33:011:301, 302, and 303). Students will not be able to take both the current version of Business Forum and one or more of the new courses and receive credit for both courses. If you have taken Business Forum, you should NOT take any of the new course offerings.

  BUSINESS POLICY -- The prerequisites for 33:620:492 Business Policy and Strategy (seniors only) are:

  • 33:390:300 Financial Management OR 33:390:310 Financial Management for Finance Majors AND
  • 33:620:301 Intro to Management AND
  • 33:630:301 Intro to Marketing

  If you are missing one of these three prerequisites, you will not be able to register for Business Policy and Strategy in your senior year. You may not take any of these courses as a co-requisite with Business Policy and Strategy.

  Major Requirements and Electives for RBS Majors

  The major requirements for Rutgers Business School: Undergraduate-New Brunswick programs of study can include a combination of required and elective courses that students take according to their choice of major. Students must complete the requirements of the major that are in effect at the time of their admission into RBS. Students may have up to three majors. All major required and elective courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.
